RV-5 Expedition 48V Pack — 48V 5000VA 15.36kWh

A complete Victron power system for caravans, motorhomes and expedition vehicles. Certified Energy Eco lithium, Victron inverter/charger, solar and vehicle charging, with full system monitoring.

At a glance

  • Battery: 300Ah at 48V — 15.36kWh stored energy
  • Inverter: 5000VA — 4,000W continuous at 25°C, 9,000W peak
  • Solar: 2x SmartSolar MPPT 150/35

What's in the pack

  • 3x Energy Eco EE48-5.12 48V 5.12kWh Semi-Solid State (AS IEC 62619 cell & pack certified)
  • 1x Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50 inverter/charger
  • 2x Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/35
  • 1x Victron Cerbo GX MK2
  • 1x Victron GX Touch 50 display
  • 1x Victron Lynx Distributor (M10)
  • 1x Victron RJ45 UTP cable 1.8m
  • 1x Victron VE.Can to CAN-bus BMS cable Type B 1.8m
  • 2x Victron VE.Direct cable 1.8m
  • 1x Victron Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-30A isolated converter (12V supply)

What it runs — inverter output

The MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50 delivers 4,000W continuous at 25°C, 3,700W at 40°C and 3,000W at 65°C (Victron datasheet), with a short-term peak of 9,000W for motor and compressor start-up. Inverters derate as they heat up, so install it somewhere ventilated and out of direct sun — on a hot Australian day in a closed compartment, plan around the 40°C figure.

In practice that runs two big loads together — for example the air conditioner and the microwave, or the kettle and an induction cooktop — with the fridge, lights and electronics running in the background. The 9000W peak rating handles compressor and pump start-ups.

Energy is the other half of the story: this pack stores 15.36kWh. As a guide, a 2000W kettle boiling for 4 minutes uses about 0.13kWh, a 1000W microwave for 10 minutes about 0.17kWh, and a typical compressor fridge around 0.5–0.8kWh a day. A 1500W air conditioner running flat out would empty a full battery in roughly 10 hours, so heavy loads are best run while the sun is out.

Charging — three ways

1. Solar. Each SmartSolar 150/35 takes 1 or 2 strings of 3 x 475W panels (about 118V on a -10°C morning, inside the 120V limit) and delivers up to about 2,000W into the battery — 4,000W total for this pack. With 2 strings a controller simply caps at its rating, which gives better output on cloudy and winter days. Not suited to alpine sites colder than about -15°C. As a rough guide, each 475W panel yields about 1.5–2kWh on a clear Australian summer day, and less in winter or in shade.

2. Driving (optional). A 48V bank can't be charged directly from a 12V or 24V alternator, so add an Orion-Tr Smart 12/48-8A or 24/48-8.5A (about 380–400W each; fit 1 or 2) to top the battery up while driving. Most of the charging on a 48V system comes from solar and mains.

12V supply: the included Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-30A converter powers your 12V equipment (lights, pumps, fridge) from the 48V bank. Add a second or third unit for 60A or 90A of 12V capacity.

3. Mains / generator. The built-in charger delivers up to 70A from mains power or a generator. Charge current into the Energy Eco batteries is automatically limited to 50A per battery by the battery management system (via the Cerbo GX). PowerAssist lets you set a limit on the input current, so a small generator or a weak campsite supply is never overloaded — the MultiPlus-II tops up from the battery if your loads exceed the supply, and it switches to battery in milliseconds if the supply drops out.

Monitoring and control

The Cerbo GX and GX Touch 50 show battery state of charge, solar, charging and loads on one screen. Connect the Cerbo to Wi-Fi or a mobile router and you can see and control the whole system remotely through Victron's free VRM portal and app, including battery data from the Energy Eco BMS over CAN.

The battery

Energy Eco batteries are certified to AS IEC 62619 at both cell and pack level — the safety standard for industrial lithium batteries — which is why we specify them for vehicles and boats.

FAQ & Help

How do I contact you?

Contact us on 02 4905 1055 or support@motion-plus.com.au. Our install teams cover the lot: Motion Plus Marine for marine electronics and electrical, Motion Plus Solar for off-grid and solar installations, and Motion Plus Electrical for electrical work — along the east coast of Australia.

Do I need a DC-DC charger with a smart alternator?

Yes. Modern vehicles (roughly Euro 5/6 onwards) use variable-voltage 'smart' alternators that swing anywhere from about 12.5V to over 15V to save fuel — which means your auxiliary or caravan battery sees too little voltage to charge properly most of the time. A DC-DC charger takes whatever the alternator gives it and outputs a correct multi-stage charge. And if the auxiliary battery is lithium, a DC-DC charger is essential regardless of alternator type: lithium connected directly can draw maximum current continuously and overheat the alternator. Simple rule: modern vehicle OR lithium auxiliary battery = DC-DC charger, no exceptions.

What size charger do I need for my battery?

The rule of thumb: aim for a MINIMUM of 10% of your battery bank's amp-hour capacity. A 100Ah battery wants at least a 10A charger; a 200Ah bank at least 20A. For AGM and GEL, 10-20% is the sweet spot — enough to charge properly without stressing the battery (check your battery's manual for its maximum). Lithium can accept much faster charging — often 50% of capacity or more — so for lithium, size the charger to how fast you want to be recharged, up to the battery's stated maximum charge current. One more thing people forget: if you'll run loads while charging (fridge, lights), add those amps on top, otherwise the loads eat the charge. Examples: 100Ah AGM — 10-20A charger. 200Ah AGM — 20-30A. 100Ah lithium — 15-30A charges in 3-6 hours, and it will happily take 50A if you want it faster.

Do you design systems and supply wiring diagrams?

Yes — three levels. Schematic Wiring Diagrams: professionally drawn schematics for each pack and common layouts. System Design service: we design the whole system to your loads and space. Done-4-You Plug & Play Boards: your components mounted and wired on 17mm structural ply (hex-faced or slip-reduced finish) with routered edges for a clean install — built to your custom design and dimensions, so it drops straight onto your van wall or boat bulkhead. Victron also publishes free example schematics: https://www.victronenergy.com/support-and-downloads/systems

My Victron product won't show up in VictronConnect — what do I do?

Victron's official first step: restart your phone (a real restart, not lock/unlock). Then check: (1) it's a 'Smart' product with the Bluetooth symbol and it's in range; (2) no other phone is connected — only one phone can connect at a time; (3) you're connecting from WITHIN the VictronConnect app, never from the phone's Bluetooth system menu — if you paired from the system menu, remove the pairing there, then reconnect inside the app. Full official guide: https://www.victronenergy.com/media/pg/VictronConnect_app/en/troubleshooting.html

Do your products need a licensed installer?

While we are confident in the advice and information provided, all electrical products must be installed by a licensed electrician or suitably qualified person, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and applicable Australian standards.

What size DC-DC charger do I need (18A/30A/50A)?

Two limits set the size. (1) The battery: same minimum-10%-of-Ah rule as any charger — a 100Ah lithium suits 18-30A, a 200Ah bank suits 30-50A. (2) The alternator: keep the charger's draw comfortably inside its output — as a guide, no more than about half the alternator's rating, since the vehicle still needs power too. And the most common installation mistake, straight from the support inbox: undersized cable. A 30A charger at the back of a caravan on thin factory trailer wiring will starve, cut out, or fail to detect the engine — the run from the vehicle battery needs properly sized cable (often 6 B&S / 13mm2 or heavier for long runs). Our made-to-order cables cover exactly this.

Can I replace my AGM battery with lithium?

Usually yes — and because lithium gives you 80-100% usable capacity versus roughly 50% for AGM, a 100Ah lithium replaces about 200Ah of AGM at a third of the weight. Three checks before you swap: (1) Every charge source needs a lithium profile — your 240V charger, MPPT and inverter/charger must be set (or settable) to a LiFePO4 program; old fixed-voltage chargers can't do it. (2) Alternator charging must go through a DC-DC charger — never connect an alternator straight to lithium. Lithium's very low internal resistance lets it pull maximum current continuously, which can cook an alternator, and modern smart alternators don't hold the right voltage anyway. (3) The BMS can disconnect the battery instantly to protect itself, so the system must tolerate that — another reason the DC-DC charger belongs in the circuit. We can check your exact setup from a photo of your battery compartment.

Do you install?

Yes — three in-house install teams: Motion Plus Marine (marine electronics and electrical systems), Motion Plus Solar (off-grid and solar systems), and Motion Plus Electrical (electrical installations). Based in the Port Stephens, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie region, with installs available within our service area along the east coast. Outside our service area, we supply the system pre-wired and programmed for your own qualified electrician to install. Tell us what you're planning and we'll quote supply and install together.

Are your products genuine, and how do warranties work?

Yes — everything we sell is genuine stock bought through each brand's Australian distribution, so the manufacturer's Australian warranty applies and we handle any claim for you locally. Warranty periods differ by brand and product type (Victron power products 5 years but Victron batteries 2-3 years; Garmin marine 2 years; Fusion Lithium 3-year replacement; Energy Eco batteries 5-10 years) — the exact terms, with a link to the manufacturer's official policy, are shown in the FAQ on every product page. Grey-import gear from overseas marketplaces often carries no valid Australian warranty at all; if the price looks too good, that's usually why.

Can lithium batteries be shipped, and how long does delivery take?

Orders are generally dispatched within 24 hours on business days. Free shipping on orders over $400 (solar panels, trolling motors, Seakeepers and some batteries excluded). Lithium batteries are dangerous goods, so they travel by road freight only — no air freight, no PO boxes or parcel lockers — and some remote areas attract a surcharge shown at checkout. Express Shipping puts your order on an express courier once packed; if you need it packed first, add our Skip the Queue service. Shipping insurance is available at checkout and we strongly recommend it on batteries. Local pickup from Taylors Beach by arrangement.

Are your lithium batteries certified for caravan use?

Under AS/NZS 3001.2:2022, batteries installed in caravans and motorhomes must be certified to IEC 62619. Every Energy Eco lithium battery — the EE12 series (135Ah and 240Ah) and the EE48-5.12 series — is certified to IEC 62619 at BOTH cell and pack level. The EE12 series additionally carries UL1642 and IEC 62133 (cell), UN38.3 (cell and pack), CE (pack) and RoHS. Certification at cell AND pack level is the part that matters — many batteries on the market only certify the cells and quietly skip the pack. Ask us for the certificates for any battery you're considering — we supply them with the quote.

What is your returns and change-of-mind policy?

Complete our online Returns Form within 7 calendar days of delivery to request a Return Authorisation — returns sent without one can't be processed. Items must be unused, unopened and in original packaging with proof of purchase. Approved change-of-mind returns incur a 25% restocking fee, with original shipping and payment-processing costs deducted, and return freight at your cost. Not returnable for change of mind: batteries, battery cabinets and racks, anything over 30kg, trolling motors, transducers, special-order and custom-made items (made-to-order cables, boards), programmed units, and opened charts or software. None of this affects your Australian Consumer Law rights — faulty goods are always covered. Full policy: [link to Shipping, Refunds & Returns page].
